Following the Rabbit Trails

How much time do I waste in my day following rabbit trails?

I see some news article, read it, and it triggers a thought about something else, so I it, and then I see a link in that blog to another article, and I read it, and then I decide I’m curious about the author, so I read that, and by the end of it all, I’m reading about a dead dog that woke up right before it was supposed to be buried.

Or I’m on facebook, and I notice an old friend, or someone who hasn’t posted in some time, and then I notice a friend who’s not my facebook friend, so I friend them, and as I’m looking through their profile, I find out the name of their favorite book, and I google that, or I find out they’ve converted to some weird religion, and I google that, and by the end of it all, I’m reading some very interesting, albeit, useless information.

How do I get tricked into thinking, “I really need to read this” or “I really need to learn about this?” How do we get lured in?

Perhaps I’m a knowledge addict? Perhaps we’re knowledge addicts? Just wanting to know more and more and more, but most of the time, at the end of these rabbit trails, I realize my time would have been better spent doing something else. Something purposeful. Something (at least) somewhat worthwhile.

So today, I’m going to try and not follow the rabbit trails. We’ll see how it goes…

“It’s a funny thing that after 3 1/2 years at Starbucks, I was ALMOST a morning person…”

That thought occurred to me earlier this week. It’s almost a joke now.

Yesterday I stole someone else’s shopping cart…

I didn’t mean to.

All I needed was a case for my sunglasses. I already found my toilet paper, body wash, deoderant, and light bulbs. My roommate Ryan was me.

I found a case and took my cart to go look for a snack. He needed to look for something else. When he found me in the snack section, he asked, “what’s the umbrella for?” I looked down and in my cart was my sunglass case, along with a rotisserie chicken, an umbrella, and an address book. Oops.

So for 5 minutes or so, I had taken off with someone else’s cart. Never done that before.

So I went back to where I found the sunglass case, sort of said out loud, “anyone missing a cart with a rotisserie chicken and umbrella?” No one responded, but I found my cart, and took off rather quickly.

So person whose cart I stole on accident, I apologize. I didn’t mean to. I’ve never done it before. I promise there won’t be a repeated offense. I hope you got another rotisserie chicken and umbrella!

Today its the right arm…

…because this is my fifth trip giving plasma. And 3 times, I’ve had ‘em stick my left arm, only once my right. I’m trying to even it out.

Are you supposed to alternate arms? I have no idea. It seems like a good idea.

And giving plasma is a great idea. In the first 5 trips, I will have earned $240. After this, if I donate twice a week, I could earn $55/week, which adds up to $220/month.

What took me so long to start doing this? Easiest money I’ve ever made in my life. And they still have wi-fi, so I still do work, I just have one hand to type with, not two.

The time is most productive spent reading or listening to podcasts.

Ope, here they go. They’re about to stick me…

(face I make when they stick me)

Now to repeatedly squeeze my hand to pump the blood faster and expediate the process :-)

I tell people I don’t burn

I have a naturally tan complexion. Actually, I am the darkest member, not only of my immediate family, but my extended family.

So I tell people I don’t burn. I just tan.

That’s a lie. A big lie. Because right now, my back and shoulders are pink. A nice pretty shade of pink.

So when I say I don’t burn, I just tan, feel free to call me a liar.

John, my friend that’s moving, wears his 3D glasses still from Avatar. He popped the lenses off. I was inspired.

This is what they look like on me.
